Last-minute congratulations cards: how late is too late, and what to write
The baby arrived on Tuesday, the engagement went up on Saturday, and the new job starts Monday. Good news has a way of sneaking up on you. The kind thing about congratulations is that it's rarely too late. Here's how late is still fine for each occasion, the fastest ways to get a card there, and what to write when you're cutting it close.
How late is too late? By occasion
A birthday card has a deadline. Most congratulations cards don't. The news is still good next week, and people tend to remember who said something, not exactly when. That said, some occasions have a sweet spot.
| Occasion | Ideal | Still welcome |
|---|---|---|
| New baby | The first two or three weeks | Up to a couple of months. New parents lose track of time anyway |
| Engagement | Within a couple of weeks of the news | Any time before the wedding |
| Wedding | On the day, or the first few weeks after | Within a few months |
| Graduation | The week of the ceremony | A month or so after |
| Year 12 results | The day results come out | Before uni or work starts |
| New job or promotion | Before or in their first week | Their first month or so |
| Retirement | Before their last day | The first few weeks of retirement |
| New home | The first month after moving in | The first few months, posted to the new address |
Two exceptions are worth being on time for: Year 12 results, because results day is the day, and retirement, if there's a farewell where the cards get read out.
The fastest ways to get a card there
If you'd still like the card to land this week, you have three options in Australia, and one of them doesn't involve leaving the house.
| Express Post | Ordered online, posted for you | By hand | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arrives | Next business day within its network | Next business day to most capital cities, three business days elsewhere | Today |
| You need | A card, an Express Post envelope, a post office | Your phone | A card and their address |
| Tracked | Yes | Yes | You'll know |
| Best for | You're near the shops before the last collection | You're busy, interstate or overseas | They live nearby |
With Snailgram, cards ordered before 2pm Sydney time on a business day are posted that afternoon. You describe a cover in a sentence, like "a tiny koala in a graduation cap", pick from three made only for you, and write your message. A real pen writes your words in real ink, exactly as you typed them, and it's posted to arrive on the day you pick. It's A$50 all in, including tracked delivery. Our delivery date calculator shows the earliest day for any postcode, and our guide to last-minute cards has the cut-off in every state and the Express Post details.
Friday afternoon is the trap. Miss the cut-off on a Friday and nothing moves until Monday, because letters aren't delivered on weekends or public holidays.
Weddings: where to send the card
Weddings are the one congratulations card where the address matters as much as the timing.
- If you're going: bring the card on the day, or post it to the couple's home a few days before. There's usually a card box or table at the reception.
- Don't post it to the venue. Venues get a lot of mail, couples are rarely there to collect it, and it can go missing.
- If you're not going: post it to their home so it arrives in the first few weeks after, when the thank-you cards are being written and the photos are coming back.
- If they're on their honeymoon: a card waiting in the letterbox when they get home is a lovely welcome back.
What to write, by occasion
Good congratulations cards do two things: name what they did, and say why it matters or what's next. Skip "congrats on your news" and say what the news is. Each of these fits in a card.
New baby
"Welcome to the world, little Ava. Sam and Lee, she's so lucky to have you both. Don't reply to this, just sleep when you can. We'll bring dinner next week."
Engagement
"Congratulations, you two! We've been waiting for this one for years. Here's to a long engagement, a great party and an even better marriage."
Wedding
"Congratulations, Mr and Mrs Kaur. Thank you for letting us be part of your day. Wishing you a lifetime of laughing at each other's jokes."
Graduation
"Dr Jordan Lee! All those late nights in the library paid off. So proud of you. Now please take a holiday."
Year 12
"Congratulations on finishing school, Mia. Whatever the number says, you worked hard for this and we're proud of you. The next bit is the fun bit."
New job or promotion
"Congratulations on the new role, Priya. They've picked the right person. Go get them, and tell us everything after your first week."
Retirement
"Happy retirement, Dave. Forty years of early starts, done. We'll miss your stories at morning tea. Enjoy every slow breakfast."
New home
"Congratulations on your first home! May the neighbours be quiet, the hot water be endless and the housewarming be soon."

If it's a bit late: one line, then move on
The mistake with a late congratulations card is spending half of it apologising. It turns their good news into your bad timing. Acknowledge it once, lightly, then write the card you'd have written anyway.
- "The news travelled faster than my card did."
- "Late, but no less thrilled for you."
- "I've been saying congratulations in my head for weeks. Here it is in ink."
- "Still celebrating this one, so it's not late, it's ongoing."
A quick text when you first hear the news, followed by a card a few days later, is the best of both. The text is the reaction. The card is the one they keep.
Questions
Is it too late to send a congratulations card?
Almost never. Unlike a birthday, most good news doesn't have a fixed day. A card for a new baby, engagement, new job, graduation or new home is welcome weeks after the news, and a wedding card is welcome for months. Send it as soon as you can, and don't apologise for more than a line.
How late can you send a wedding card?
If you weren't at the wedding, a card posted to the couple's home in the first few weeks is ideal, and one within a few months is still kind. If you're going to the wedding, bring the card on the day or post it to their home beforehand, not to the venue.
How soon should you send a new baby card?
Within the first few weeks is lovely, but new parents are busy and a card that arrives a month or two later is just as welcome. Address it to the parents, or to the parents and the baby by name if they've shared it.
Can I get a congratulations card delivered tomorrow in Australia?
Often, yes, if tomorrow is a business day and the address is in a capital city. Express Post is next business day within its network if you post before the cut-off. With Snailgram, a card ordered before 2pm Sydney time on a business day is posted that day and arrives the next business day in most capital city postcodes.
What do you write in a late congratulations card?
Say congratulations first, acknowledge the delay in one line at most, then say something specific about what they've done. For example: "Congratulations on the new job, Priya. The news travelled faster than my card did. They're lucky to have you."
